In December 2008, the Mississippi Supreme Court created the Mississippi Model Jury Instructions Commission and charged it with conducting a comprehensive examination of jury instructions used in Mississippi trial courts and recommending to the Supreme Court revised, modified, and simplified instructions as needed.
As directed by the Mississippi Supreme Court, the Commission was to draft instructions that would give jurors guidance as to the law applicable to the cases before them in clear and concise language that would be understandable to jurors without legal training. The Commission was to create a set of improved instructions for use in both civil and criminal litigation in Mississippi trial courts.
On October 24, 2012, the Mississippi Model Jury Instructions Commission submitted two volumes, civil and criminal, of Mississippi Plain Language Model Jury Instructions to the Mississippi Supreme Court.
