Mr. Patton is a partner with Bose McKinney & Evans LLP in Indianapolis and Washington, D.C. He chairs the firm's appellate group, concentrating his practice in state and federal appeals. He has served as counsel of record in 21 opinions or published orders of the Indiana Supreme Court, with nine oral arguments; 58 published opinions of the Indiana Court of Appeals, with 22 oral arguments; and nine opinions in the U. S. Court of Appeals, with six oral arguments. In addition, he co-authored an amicus curiae brief cited by the U.S. Supreme Court.
He is admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court; the U. S. Courts of Appeals 7th Circuit, District of Columbia Circuit and Federal Circuit; the U.S. District Court for the Northern and Southern Districts of Indiana; the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia; the Indiana Court of Appeals and Trial Courts; and the District of Columbia Court of Appeals. Mr. Patton received his bachelor of arts degree, cum laude, from Wabash College in 1984 after studying at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland from 1982 to 1983. In 1987, he received his juris doctor degree, cum laude, from Indiana University School of Law. He also has written several articles for the Indiana Law Review on Indiana appellate procedure that have been cited by the Indiana Supreme Court, the Indiana Court of Appeals and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit.
Mr. Patton was the first chair (2001-2002) of the Council of Appellate Lawyers for the American Bar Association. He also was a barrister (2001-2004) for the Edward Coke Appellate Inn of Court, the first American Inn of Court dedicated exclusively to appellate practice. Mr. Patton also was the first chair (1996-1997) of the Indiana State Bar Association's Appellate Practice Section and served as the chair (1997-2001) of the Appellate Rules Project that resulted in substantial amendments to the Indiana Rules of Appellate Procedure in 2001.
Since joining Bose McKinney & Evans LLP in 1989, Mr. Patton has served as an adjunct assistant professor of law (1990-1994) at the Indiana University School of Law.
