This is the premier practice-oriented guide to using the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, written by a leading expert who is a former member of the Federal Civil Rules Advisory Committee. For each rule, the author explains what the rule covers, how it works, how it has been interpreted by courts, and how it is used in practice. This title provides the most complete and current discussion possible; it is updated annually with new rule amendments, the latest case law, and emerging trends and issues integrated directly into the analysis.
Extensive citations to current case law and the best foundational precedents allow users to quickly find relevant cases and determine local practice and interpretation. Special emphasis and expanded coverage are given to the topics that matter the most in practice, including pleading and amendments, motions to dismiss, discovery, and summary judgment.
For the 2025 edition, the author and publisher's editorial staff have reformatted the book into numbered sections and generated detailed tables of contents for the commentary on each rule. The author spent most of the last year revisiting the content and organizing every line of the book, spanning over 3,000 pages, to make sure it was all in the right place and right order. As the author wrote in the introduction to the edition, "The moment we started to see the results, we knew it was a major enhancement well worth all the effort."
